Wouldn’t it be awesome if the actual “An Imperial Affliction” could be written by Nerdfighteria? If any reader of TFiOS could take part in creating the book that Hazel and Augustus (will) have read? (I know, wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey stuff…)
So, here’s what I have in mind:
We create a (maybe wiki-based) Internet site, where…
(a) we collect everything we know about AIA (i.e., quotes, topics etc.),
(b) (on an extra site for every chapter) anyone can be involved in writing the story and
(c) (on another extra site for every chapter and so on) the story, the plot, the use of quotes in TFiOS etc. can be discussed.
Of course, this story should not *seem* to based on TFiOS, but rather to be a base for TFiOS itself (this kind of reminds me of Arcaicam Esperantom…).

Problems:
1.: Neither do I have any plot idea, nor am I a particularly good writer (but then again, that’s why the story should be written not by me, but by any TFiOS-reader..)
2.: I have absolutely no knowledge about how to set up such a site.
3.: It would probably be the best if this was officially APPROVED BY JOHN (especially with all the confusing copyright stuff going on nowadays)!

Approved! John just gave me his ‘OK’ for this project… So it would be great if anyone with a little experience in how to set up such a site could now.. come forward. Thanks!

I’m pretty good at coming up with stories so I MIGHT be able to get something decent going. [Only having made one full story based off the bits and pieces of a fake story that exists inside a real story (The inseption of stories is hard to eplaine!) and never having tried for AIA I can't make any promises of greatness.]
I’m also pretty sure that I can’t write A THING like Peter van Houten so… I’d probably be writing it out in my words then giving it to some kick a** writer who will make it sound like their own… er.. Peter’s.
(So I realize that I kind of set up my own plan there, but I’m just throwing ideas out there for people to see. If you already have a plan then I don’t mean to step on your toes. Like I said, just throwing ideas out there.)

@maven The site is online, set up by made-of-awesome Sam Rudge: aia-writers.yourpants.org
You could start e.g. at the plot line of chapter 1 (just write some suggestions/ideas), or already start writing the first chapter. That’s up to you. (And don’t forget to promote this project!)

How soon are you wanting it? I need to know how much time I have to think. (Also, if anyone sees that I’m online and wants to help out just start PMing me asking me what I’ve got so far and start asking questions. that usually helps out a LOT)

Just take as much time as you want – this is a long-term collab project, so it might even be that someone begins writing before you do… (Although I don’t think that will be the case.)

I am willing to help with this. I’m a bit of a writer, and I think this would be quite fun!

we already know the general plot idea,
its diary format written from the perspective of a character who is possibly wealthy, living with just her mum and a hampster she does not know if her mums suitor is genuine or conning them for the cash., in the end for unknown reasons she stops writing, although probably previous to that wrote about being severly ill, or not wanting to get caught trying to find out about the suitor, (he may have walked in on her writing, or she may have died, or so forth but that is unknown, so the ending of the book would have to leave several options open)

The story in and of it self shouldn’t be hard to write because of it’s format, because I’m assuming that there will be multiple writer’s it’s getting everyone to have the same writing style of this little girl. So once the story is written out there will need to be an editor or many editors to make sure the writing is the same. We would need to put up and example of the writing style for the authors to write in.

Also we have to think about: Do we want to be true to the length of the book? It’s 600+ pages in the book, which makes me think that maybe the book started when the little girl first got cancer and looking at how every one around her reacts to that occurrence.

Though this should be fun

I’m also willing to get involved with this, it sounds like it could be pretty fun!
If it’s over 600 pages then I guess we would have to start at least close to when she first got cancer, maybe just after, otherwise I’d imagine there’d be a lot of space in the middle of the story where nothing much happens (unless there’s some major plot twist at the centre of it or something like that).

Just in case anyone of you (or anyone else) hasn’t read through all of these posts – here’s the link to the aia-writing page:

It’s really great you’re helping! ;)
