Greetings, nerdfighteria!

An idea for a shirt occurred to me as I waited for John & Hank to sign my copy of TFIOS at the tour kick off. What if we had a shirt with “DFTBA” written in a bunch of different languages? We could all contribute a translation from the language(s) we speak and make a true collaborative project out of it. John and Hank both thought it was an awesome idea, so maybe we can get a design going to show them!!

Any takers? Go ahead and translate the phrase to the best of your ability, into whatever language of your choosing, and together we can perfect our translations.

I vaguely speak Swedish, so I’ll start:

Glöm inte att vara skitbra! (Is there a better word for awesome, maybe, svensk nerdfighers?)

DFTBA!!

I’ll go ahead and give the English version: Don’t Forget to Be Awesome!

(Sorry, I can’t speak any other languages)

In Spanish would be something like “No te olvides de ser impresionante” NTODSI

The biggest problem is to find an accurate translation for “awesome”. I used “impresionante” but you could also use “fantastico”, “genial”, etc…

In Chinese might be “Bù yào wàngjì shì zhēn bàng” BYWSZB” hahahaha…Not sure if the translation is ok.

As you can see, it is impossible to translate some things. That’s why some things should never be translated. DFTBA shouldnt be translated. Nerdfighteria was born in English and should be this way. I know that this could be a barrier to get awesome people around the world to join us.

Just to give an example, we all hate when bands or musicians from English-speaking countries translate their songs into Spanish or other foreign languages. The content and meaning of the song usually changes dramatically!

English is the official language here in Nerdfighteria, I don´t want to watch the vlogbrothers translated in Spanish. I dont even want to see Spanish subtitles in their videos!

Irish: Ná déan dearmad a bheith iontach!

I don’t think there’s a proper word in Irish for ‘awesome’, so I just chose a word with a similar meaning!

I think in Italian it would be Non Dimenti Essere Fantastico

(I’m English, but I am studying Italian so I hope there are no grave errors here)

@Pedro L.

I completely agree, I had problems translating “awesome” too, in the past, but Incrível seems like the best choice :)

In dutch it’s something like: Vergeet niet om geweldig te zijn.

And yeah translating awesome is hard

In French:
N’oubliez pas être merveilleux!

Merveilleux has to take the place of “awesome” because the french “awesome” is different than the modern english “awesome”

It gets roughly the same point across.

Wow, you are all amazing/awesome/fantastic/super! Thanks for becoming a part of this project!

And no worries about directly translating “awesome” — as any of us who speak multiple language learn immediately, it’s impossible to translate perfectly between languages. What’s important is that we get the closest approximation within each language. Such as for the Swedish, there is also no word quite like “awesome,” so I used my close favorite: skitbra. It literally means “good-as-shit,” which I think is an appropriate transliteration of awesome! It’s ok for us to have (a lot of) fun with this.

It’s all about showing how international our community is and recognizing nerdfighters whose primarily language isn’t English — who are awesome, and fantastico, and merveilleux, and incrível, and skitbra!

Cheers, and thanks to all who have participated so far!

I think Google Translate shouldn’t count because it fucks up all the time. My moms friend used to translate I japanese word from English to Japanese and all of this word came out sex and turns out that isn’t what it was supposed to be translated to. And she sent it to Japan… And got fired. Until they found out later.
