I’m going to have to agree with Aimee. I only annotate (and annotate heavily) the things I read for school. If I’m reading for pleasure, I never annotate. I wouldn’t mind annotating really, I don’t think it destroys a book in any way, but I’d rather think on the surface level whenever I read fiction.

The only book I’ve ever actually highlighted is The Perks of Being A Wallflower after reading it 3 times and finding it too quotable to resist. I am considering doing it with other books though, because I really enjoy reading it over and reading all the lines I loved. And the only book I have ever annotated was my copy of The Merchant of Venice for school, which I had to annotate. I find it hard to annotate books because I’m not very insightful with them.

I annotate my books all the time, though some are definitely more annotated than others. As a general rule, I never annotate a hard copy or a special edition, but any paperbacks are fair game. Books by Dickens, the only man I have ever truly loved, are usually annotated the most out of anything I own. My copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is a close second, though.

I’m reading Moby Dick and highlighting all the places where there are similarities between it and Leviathan by mastodon. Other than that I don’t.

I do. Only in pencil and very VERY lightly. You never know if you will change your opinion in 20 years or something wont be as interesting as it was 20 years ago.

I love to annotate my books! Does anyone else also flick the pages idly, just to get them to be dog-eared faster? I love well-used books …

i fold down the corners of pages with funny lines or if they have something i wanna show a friend, but i dont highlight or anything. im like my friends’ library, so i try to keep books looking nice in case they mess them up.

Nice name =], also I’m with you! I love a well used book, it makes them look loved. All my Potter books are roughed up a bit, especially the last two. I just think it shows how much I’ve read them and loved them.

My friends get frustrated with me because I never used a bookmark. I either leave them face down or dog-ear them. I like a book with a worn line down the spine.

@Brittany Hudson Thanks :) I’ve just done exactly the same with The Hunger Games – it does look lovely and used now …

I was raised to think that it’s sacriledge so it never happens. I used to write my name in books, but that’s as far as I will go. Reading other people’s notes bothers me, it distracts me.

I had never highlighted a book (mostly because since there are lots of books I like that aren’t available here I read almost everything on my computer) until I got my copy of TFiOS. The next day a friend of mine saw me doing it and yelled at me that books are sacred and that I am going to hell now.

I dislike using highlighters in a book – the colour distracts the general flow of the words of the page. It’s like it’s yelling at me to pay attention to it when really it may not be needed. I use pencil to note some paragraphs or underline things in non-fiction books as I may skim through it again in the future. However I never write in fiction books – it takes away the rhythm of reading and the story should be read with the eyes only, not touched with another pencil. It’s a weird way of seeing it, but a fiction book should look new in my library. I like giving my books away too since I have too many to keep all of them, so it’s a good thing that I don’t write in them or fold the page corners (another pet peeve of mine).

Depends on the book. Normally, if it’s for school, I heavily annotate and highlight my books for future reference. But if the reading is for leisure, I like to keep my books crisp, clean, and protected. Sometimes, I’m such a rebel though… I dog-ear the pages.

I generally don’t annotate my books. It’s not because I think that it is defacing the book, or damaging it in some way, I just like to have them look clean.

I’ve annotated plays and non-fiction but why would you want to write on a novel? :P
