| TheStig | I just thought I’d make a few guidelines for any people new to roleplaying, not that there are any now but you never know. This may even be helpful for those more experienced. Feel free to add stuffs. Terminology: OOC- Out of Character. If you want to say something as an actual person to other actual people outside the story, put this before you say it. Mary Sues/Gary Stus: A slang term for characters who are “flat” or otherwise 2-dimensional. These characters often lack the depth required for true character development throughout a story, or that have only one predominant character trait (ie. a character was created only to be cowardly/strong/lonely/etc.) The name of these characters, Mary Sues for female characters and Gary Stus for male characters, comes from English names which are very common and rather unoriginal — sort of like these kinds of characters. God Mods- Things that prevent your character from having bad things to happen to them. God-modders make the game less fun because their characters are usually perfect and invulnerable. If you do this, you are an asshat. Character Sheets- That list of attributes that comes usually after the description that you use to make a character. You NEED to make one of these before participating. PM- Private message. Useful if you want to work something out in private between two players. Rules of Thumb: -If you miss a lot of action, do not fret. You can ask for catch up in OOC. |

| Beckie | We should get this permanently attached to the top of the forum, I mean, there’s not going to be much to add to this and if we’re not careful it’ll fall to the bottom of the pile and help nobody… |

| America | Just PM the Admin. I did, and he made me a Sub-Forum. So my guess is he’s chill enough to do it. |

| Noelle | My favorite rule in there is the spelling one. This should pop up on people’s screen the first time they ever click the Roleplaying link. |

| Captain Mollyanne Sunshine | Bumping this again. |

| Will | I think all you have to do to get it stickies is mention the admin and ask nicely I may be wrong @sam could you please sticky this thread so anyone new will know how to RP properly? |
| January 10, 2012 at 12:17 am #25264 | |
| TheStig | w00t! Stickied! Thanks to whomever did that. |
| January 10, 2012 at 4:42 pm #26086 | |
| Beckie | I PMed him and he did this one and the RP ideas |

| Munk | One thing that I’ve learned while RPing is this: It’s natural that when you roleplay, your post contains some reaction to what happened in the previous couple of posts. But what’s even more important is to add something in your post that others can react to themselves. Be it part of a dialogue, or punching somebody, or noticing that something is happening somewhere, just add something that others can continue on. That really helps in keeping an RP from dying. |

| Leah but you can call me Bones | This sounds really awesome, about how much would you need to be online to do this. I have school all day and probably a play, would an hour or two (sometimes more sometimes less) be ok? |
| January 27, 2012 at 3:47 am #43451 | |
| TheStig | Most of us are middle/high school. You don’t have to be on 24/7 but and hour or two is fine depending on an RP’s speed. If a lot of people are in it, it will go fast and you will miss a lot. The only way to know is just trying. |

| Katie's PsychoBabbling | Another Rule- don’t try arguing about the rules with an older player. Or any player who accuses you of breaking one. Just change it. Also, don’t fill up pages with just random OOC chit-chat, especially at first- it discourages people from signing up. Oh and don’t be a bi*** targeting one character just because they did something you didn’t to your character. Suck it up, avoid conflict and move on since even if your characters dislike each other you don’t have to fight with a user- it spreads to other RPs and annoys everyone else. One last piece of advice from a has-been: Respect the Thread-Master (or RP creator) it’s their world, they make the rules. So if anything, respect the other players. It gets you well liked and welcomed in most RPs (even invited to some private ones!). Yes your characters may get violent with one another, but even though your character is evil doesn’t you have to be! To sum it all up: Don’t be an a@@hole. |

| America | There seems to a wave of new role players recently. So I shall post my rules. RULE 1: RULE 2: RULE 3: RULE 4: RULE 5: These five rules make the difference between this: den i walk over to rice and says how is u doin rice i is fel gud 2day ok ill c u l8r And this: Then Chris walked over to Ryc and said, “How are you doing Ryc? I’m feeling good today. Okay, I’ll see you later.” Amazing isn’t it? EDIT: RULE 6: Asterisks. Fucking asterisks. No. Just no. Never. They are NEVER acceptable. I don’t care what you use them for, they don’t belong in REAL role plays. Yeah. Nothing more to say on the subject. |

| Nova | Ok I have a question (I’m a newbie to role playing…) this character sheet you speak of…. where do you post it? |
| March 29, 2012 at 12:59 am #72579 | |
| America | In the role play that it’s for. Just copy and paste it, fill it out, and post it. |
| March 29, 2012 at 1:21 am #72595 | |
| Nova | oh ok thanks. |
| March 29, 2012 at 1:33 am #72604 | |
| Captain Mollyanne Sunshine | UNLESS it says to PM (private message) It to the person. Then you do just that. |
| March 29, 2012 at 1:47 am #72620 | |
| Chris Salvati | umm, there are three tenses in the language america. Past, Present, and Future. |
| March 29, 2012 at 1:49 am #72623 | |
| Captain Mollyanne Sunshine | Yes, Chris, but there’s no way you can talk in future tense.
|
| March 29, 2012 at 1:50 am #72624 | |
| America | No. There is not a Future Tense in the English language. Unless you speak a different English than me. |
| March 29, 2012 at 1:53 am #72628 | |
| Chris Salvati | I Went and got a glass of milk- Past |
| March 29, 2012 at 1:55 am #72631 | |
| America | In English we imply futurity through the use of auxiliary verbs, most commonly will and shall. But there is no set form or tense. Learn your shit. Tell me, if got is past, and get is present, what is the future tense of the verb to get? |
| March 29, 2012 at 1:58 am #72635 | |
| Katie's PsychoBabbling | 1. Captain-Well I guess the Thread Master could talk in future tense. Like- 100 years from now you will be taken on an epic voyage through time and space. 2. America I assume we speak the same English- words like “will” could be considered future tense 3. Chris, no offense here but please don’t be a smart@ss. America was just listing the most common tenses used in RPs. You know you’ll just get America worked up. This is not the time nor place for that. If it really bugs you go start a debate about it in General Discussion, this is not good advice, a good example, or a impression you are leaving for the newbies. 4. Please ignore me if I’m wrong, grammar is not my strong suit. Just trying to defuse a could-be battle of angry squids.

| March 29, 2012 at 1:59 am #72636 | |
| Chris Salvati | Wow, I though that iffuturity was implied, it was a tense. Sorry, It made sense to me. |
| March 29, 2012 at 2:00 am #72638 | |
| Captain Mollyanne Sunshine | Eh, I guess, Katie.
|
| March 29, 2012 at 2:01 am #72641 | |
| Chris Salvati | Phychobabble! you’re back! Huzzah! |
| March 29, 2012 at 2:05 am #72648 | |
| Katie's PsychoBabbling | Yo! Sorry I had so real life issues to sort out, but yeah. Nice to read you again. ^_^ |
| April 1, 2012 at 3:02 pm #73989 | |
| Just Apples | Noob question: is one on one roleplaying exactly what it sounds like? Two people roleplaying against each other? |
| April 1, 2012 at 3:32 pm #73993 | |
| America | Not really against. But yeah, it’s w role play with only two people. |
| April 4, 2012 at 10:04 am #75493 | |
| TheStig | One thing I think should be said: Say your character’s name at least once in a post. I find every 5 sentences or so is good. |
