| Melissa | Ok, so I remember that in the old Your Pants there was a thread where people could post bands/artists/singers that many people didn’t know about, but were still fairly good. Here’s a few: Alex Winston, The View, The Two Man Gentleman Band, José González, The Sheepdogs (relatively), The Shins, The Spill Canvas, Tom Smart, etc. Carry on, lovely people of Your Pants!

| Samuel | It depends how you class lesser known – most indie music is not known by most people. But if you’re thinking real obscure stuff then…Jeffrey Lewis, A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Fanfarlo. In terms of slightly obscure, more cult bands, then…Neutral Milk Hotel, XTC, The Mountain Goats, They Might Be Giants, Young Knives etc etc. |

| Julia | Frightened Rabbit, Admiral Fallow, The Twilight Sad and King Creosote (particularly the “Diamond Mine” album that he did with Jon Hopkins) are the ones that spring to mind for me. And I’ve heard of the View! They’re not my favourite band but I don’t mind them :’) |
| January 4, 2012 at 4:17 pm #13661 | |
| Samuel | @julia is the King Creasote/Jon Hopkins album the one that got nominated for a mercury? |
| January 4, 2012 at 4:41 pm #13716 | |
| Melissa | @samc I mean anything really, I was originally thinking of the really obscure stuff but the indie bands are lovely too. And Diamond Mine is the album that got nominated for the Mercury Prize @julia You’ve heard of The View? Brilliant! To be honest, I only know a few of their songs, but the ones I know of aren’t bad. |
| January 4, 2012 at 4:47 pm #13737 | |
| Julia | @samc I actually didn’t know that :’) It’s good enough though. I think it might be my fifth favourite album ever. Maybe. |
| January 4, 2012 at 4:49 pm #13743 | |
| Samuel | @julia pretty sure it did. I havent heard it properly, but from what I’ve heard it sounds great. Fifth favourite album is quite a statement |

| Tess Leyland | does frank turner count? he’s had a couple of albums but not many people know him, general fiasco are good too, ben marwood, jonah matranga, joe summers..there are a few more, but they;ve escaped my mind at the moment(: |
| January 4, 2012 at 4:52 pm #13756 | |
| Samuel | @stillnotcool I love frank turner! |
| January 4, 2012 at 4:53 pm #13757 | |
| Melissa | @stillnotcool Frank Turner counts! He’s amazing. I wish more people knew of him. |
| January 4, 2012 at 4:55 pm #13766 | |
| Sam M | I’m a big fan of Bastille and Ivyrise – I really do advise checking them both out. And @stillnotcool Frank Turner is a legend! |
| January 4, 2012 at 4:56 pm #13772 | |
| Tess Leyland | ahh this is epic, i never seen this much love for him |
| January 4, 2012 at 4:59 pm #13782 | |
| Melissa | @stillnotcool Is he the guy who wrote “You, Your Cat and Me”? |
| January 4, 2012 at 5:00 pm #13784 | |
| Lee | The Ragbirds, We are the Willows, and the Rural Alberta Advantage are all pretty small bands that I’ve seen locally. Man Man and Fun are two that I like that seem to have more of a following but I’ve never really run into another fan. |
| January 4, 2012 at 5:03 pm #13797 | |
| Melissa | @leeeecar You’re joking….You like Man Man? I love them. They’re quite different sounding, aren’t they? |
| January 4, 2012 at 5:06 pm #13805 | |
| Tess Leyland | yep that’s him(: |
| January 4, 2012 at 5:32 pm #13876 | |
| Rowena | Frank Turner is brilliant, Love Ire And Song is one of my favourite albums ever. Metronomy are good, their latest album got nominated for the Mercury and is one of the best albums of the last year but not many people really know it. |
| January 4, 2012 at 5:53 pm #13923 | |
| Melissa | @kangaro Metronomy sounds so familiar…………. |
| January 4, 2012 at 5:54 pm #13928 | |
| Samuel | @kangaro Love, Ire and Song is my fav Frank Turner album! And also, the newest Metronomy album is so good! |
| January 4, 2012 at 6:03 pm #13945 | |
| Iain Ross | Spector, Childish Gambino, Wavves, Eager Teeth, Sbtrkt, Tune-Yards, Best Coast (<3), Death Grips, Kurt Vile, Cerebral Ballzy and The Horrors (I'm not sure if their lesser known) I could probably say lots more but i'm tired P.S Frank Turner <3 |
| January 4, 2012 at 6:04 pm #13946 | |
| Iain Ross | and the view!! |
| January 4, 2012 at 6:07 pm #13954 | |
| Julia | @samc it’s kind of a vague guess. If I actually sat down and wrote a list I don’t know where it would end up. I always feel bad listing favourite artists and songs and stuff because I feel guilty about the ones I leave out. |
| January 4, 2012 at 6:28 pm #13997 | |
| Chuck | Pas/Cal, The Gerbils, Math & Physics Club, Say Hi, Drop Nineteens, The Good Life, I Am Oak, Phosphorescent, Grizzly Bear… I’m blanking. |
| January 4, 2012 at 6:41 pm #14012 | |
| anne | @leeeecar @peregrintook Yay!people who like Man Man. I once encountered someone who had Knuckle Down at his ring tone, but since he was at least eight years younger than me I thought it’s be a bit weird to randomly talk to him xD I think most lesser known bands I listen to are lesser known because they’re foreign. Kaizers Orchestra, Timbuktu, Kill it Kid, Cloroform, Kaada, LaBrassBanda, Asaf Avidan & The Mojos, David & The Citizens, Wunderkammer, Billy Barman and Seeed come to mind. |
| January 4, 2012 at 6:44 pm #14015 | |
| elferdave | Idk if these classify as lesser known, but everyone I ask hasn’t heard of Automatic Loveletter, Black Veil Brides, or Say Anything. I love Do Better by Say Anything. Juliet Simms (lead singer of Automatic Loveletter) is one of my favorite singers, ever. I am definitely making up a list of these groups everyone’s mentioned and checking them out |
| January 4, 2012 at 6:50 pm #14023 | |
| Hilde | @samc Jeffrey Lewis, YES! I never heard from anyone who likes Jeffrey Lewis outside the people on the Jeff Lewis Board. I love his lyrics, they are so clever! What’s your favourite album? And to add to the list: Beirut, Detektivbyrån, Noah and the Whale, Laura Marling and Reina del Cid. The Shins were mentioned before, but I must say again that I cannot understand why not everyone knows of them. They’re brilliant! |
| January 4, 2012 at 6:54 pm #14029 | |
| Samuel | @dutchesse The only album of his that I know really well is his most recent, A Turn in the Dream-Songs, which is amazing. Also, I love Beirut, Noah and the Whale, The Shins and Laura Marling, woo! |
| January 4, 2012 at 6:54 pm #14030 | |
| Lisa | I love The Rasmus. But no one I speak to about them has ever heard of them. Sadface. |
| January 4, 2012 at 7:00 pm #14039 | |
| Hilde | @samc Yay, music buddies! Ah, the new album is great too. Water Leaking, Water Moving is so calming:) I think my favourite album is City and Eastern Songs, every single song on that one is gold. When I feel sad I always listen to Don’t Be Upset and it makes me smile. The background vocals on How Can It Be have the same effect, it’s just so hilarious! Since you like Laura Marling and NatW, I guess you also like Mumford and Sons? They can’t be left out in this little list now, can they? |
| January 4, 2012 at 7:02 pm #14042 | |
| Samuel | @dutchesse Ah yes, I used to listen to their album all the time, but they’ve not released anything in about three years. I think they have a new album coming soon though. |
| January 4, 2012 at 7:10 pm #14064 | |
| Hilde | @samc There are new songs on youtube. They did this project together with Laura Marling where they went to India and played with folk musicians from there, those videos are great. What I love most about all of the musicians I mentioned above is that you can see, hear and feel the fun they have in playing music, and the nice, homey feeling listening to their music gives me. I guess that’s the upside of lesser-known artists, they have smaller audiences so the music is more intimate, this especially goes for concerts and shows. On the other side it does suck if you buy your cds in a lovely little music store and you have to order your cds every time because they don’t have them in the store… |
| January 4, 2012 at 7:24 pm #14090 | |
| Nina | Rhian Sheehan? He’s a composer/producer from New Zealand and his work is gorgeous. And if anyone needs some music to listen to while writing a long essay, then I’d recommend this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQmu1mp4Xhg |
| January 4, 2012 at 7:24 pm #14092 | |
| Melissa | A couple people mentioned Jeffrey Lewis? Awesome. @Hilde I know what you mean. It also seems like a lot of more popular artists create music so that it can be well recieved by the whole mainstream media. I’ve known tons of lesser artists who gradually become a lot more mainstream and it sort of ruins what made their music likeable in the first place. Also, are Mumford & Sons really not well known? Huh, I thought more people knew about them. @applesaucetrauma I’ve heard of him before, does he use a music box in some of his songs? I havn’t checked the link yet, but I’ve heard some of his stuff and quite liked it.

| January 4, 2012 at 8:40 pm #14296 | |
| Rowena | @dutchesse I love Laura Marling too |
| January 4, 2012 at 9:24 pm #14432 | |
| Adrienne | Marksmen, Waterstrider, and Matt Costa are some I’ve heard of recently. Also, is Blind Pilot considered “lesser known”? Because oh my god Blind Pilot. I’m really glad to see Frightened Rabbit, Laura Marling, and Kaizers Orchestra listed. Nerdfighteria has some good musical taste buds. I’ll also add the Becca Stevens Band. They do a cover of Kiss From A Rose that is to die for. |
| January 4, 2012 at 10:14 pm #14578 | |
| TheStig | RED FANG! That is all… |
| January 4, 2012 at 11:11 pm #14739 | |
| Emma | bedouin soundclash. im not sure how ‘unknown’ they are, but the only way i found out about them is cause i walked past them doing a really small free outdoor live show downtown toronto, where they’re from. i lovelovelove them though! |
| January 4, 2012 at 11:23 pm #14771 | |
| Cassie @chemelon | I love Maggie Bell and Stone the Crows, she has a voice that could make angels swoon. |
| January 5, 2012 at 12:27 am #14958 | |
| Alex | @samc @dutchesse @peregrintook We might have to start a Jeffrey Lewis appreciation club. @leeeecar @peregrintook @anne I saw Man Man live a few months ago and Honus Honus definitely punched me in the shoulder during one of the songs. It was an unforgettable show. @samc A Hawk and a Hacksaw are great too. I got to see them play live as well. |
| January 5, 2012 at 5:34 am #15756 | |
| Aimee | Some lesser known artists that I really like are Jeremy Messersmith, Blind Pilot, Frightened Rabbit, He Is We, Parachute, Slow Club, and Bon Iver. Just to name a few |
| January 5, 2012 at 5:49 am #15801 | |
| Almog | @samc Neutral Milk Hotel is a great band, but most people think it’s plain weird. Same goes for Beirut. |
| January 5, 2012 at 5:51 am #15806 | |
| Andrea | Nice to see so many people mentioning Frank Turner and Laura Marling, two of my favourites! Also Katie Costello, Greg Holden, Kate McGill, Lisa Hannigan… |
| January 5, 2012 at 5:57 am #15818 | |
| Lucyha | This is a long shot, but… The Dear Hunter? Absolutely fantastic band, very under appreciated. |
| January 5, 2012 at 6:22 am #15862 | |
| Ben Purell | I felt I should join onto this list as I spend most of my time looking for small or lesser known bands to listen to. My more recent findings include Cryoshell, Cruxshadow, HIM, and Poets of the Fall. |
| January 5, 2012 at 6:35 am #15880 | |
| Ashley Phalange | Velour, The Shins, Belle and Sebastian (sort of), Grizzly Bear (Whoo @chuck), Iron and Wine (sort of), Laurena (DFTBA Records @Andrea , I love Katie Costello’s Cassette tape :] |
| January 5, 2012 at 5:06 pm #16145 | |
| Nina | @peregrintook Yup, that’s him, and I’m slightly sad that I found out about him so late because for a limited amount of time, one of his albums (Standing In Silence) came with a music box. |
| January 5, 2012 at 5:17 pm #16164 | |
| Samuel | Are there any other Tally Hall fans here? |
| January 5, 2012 at 5:47 pm #16217 | |
| Melissa | @applesaucetrauma Oh nice @samc I listen to him a bit, but I wouldn’t say I’m a HUGE fan. |
| January 5, 2012 at 5:53 pm #16228 | |
| Pharmer H | I’m from Oregon, and on an NPR station I listen to, there’s a program on the weekend called In House that plays a ton of new music, some of it Indie. Not all catches my ear, but I was hooked by a song from a band called the Rosebuds, and it was terrific. Very unknown group. Here’s the song if anyone’s interested. |
| January 5, 2012 at 5:57 pm #16236 | |
| Melissa | @pharmerh That’s really nice sounding…Must download Rosebuds. |
