| rback57 | Wilco. They’re an experimental rock band from Chicago. And have one of the best guitarists of all time. And are in every other way, awesome. Art of Almost is, in my opinion, their best song: |

| Chuck | @robert I wouldn’t really consider Wilco unknown. I mean maybe it’s just where I’m from but I know a lot of people who are into them..

| Archaeopteryx | Breathe Owl Breathe are a folk band from the mid-northern US. Quite possibly my favorite band–their music is great and their lyrics are simply gorgeous. http://www.breatheowlbreathe.bandcamp.com/album/magic-central That’s my favorite album, though they have a couple others. |
| January 5, 2012 at 9:32 pm #16609 | |
| Melissa | @archaeopteryx I really like how that sounds, and as you say, the lyrics are gorgeous. I’ve started compiling a list of these artists |

| Marissa | Stars, Hey Rosetta!, Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s, The Middle East. Oh, and if you’re feeling really hipster, there’s Massive Scar Era. They’re a female-fronted Egyptian band. You can listen their stuff on their facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/massive.scar.era.egypt |

| Quinn Schuster | Cold War Kids, Mumford and Sons, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Blue Eyed Shark Experiment. |
| January 6, 2012 at 8:26 pm #18494 | |
| Ethan | Of Monsters and Men, Josie Charlwood, Madeon, Fool’s Gold, Anamanaguchi, Beirut, Darwin Deez, Nosaj Thing, Jinja Safari, Lord Huron, Rostam Batmanglij, The Honey Trees, Tycho, Wye Oak. I could go on and on… |

| Cricket Cary-Green | One of my favorite bands is Grouplove. They’re pretty new and had this one song called Colours that was played on the radio (at least the stations I listen to) for a bit but they didn’t play anything else and they haven’t gotten a lot of recognition that I know of. They’re sort of indie rock, and I’m not sure how to describe them, so I’ll just leave the listening up to you guys.

| Aoife | She’s not a “band” but my favourite artist is Joanna Newsom and I know nobody at all who knows her. I only know her from creeping about on Last.fm! She has a very unique voice and plays harp and piano. And has amazing lyrics, might I add. Definitely not for everyone which is probably why she would never be played on the radio or such! |
| January 7, 2012 at 10:01 pm #21008 | |
| Rowena | I’ve heard of her, she’s on my list of people I need to listen to more though. Patrick Wolf, Yeasayer, The Horrors, Los Campesinos!, Villagers, Wild Beasts and Stornoway are some other groups/people I really like that I guess aren’t so well known. |
| January 7, 2012 at 11:07 pm #21263 | |
| Aoife | @kangaro I listen to Yeasayer, they’re pretty amazing! |
| January 8, 2012 at 12:47 am #21448 | |
| Violet | One of my favorite bands is called Quinzy. They’re pretty great. |
| January 8, 2012 at 1:02 am #21493 | |
| Forest | Grey Fiction is a pretty good band, sort of singer songwriter thing but he works with a band, soft rock and intelligent lyrics. I feel like George Watsky’s solo career is somewhat under-known, he’s a slam poet and hip-hop artist, but with a slightly more slam poetry intellect in his hip-hop. |

| Hannah Victoria | I don’t know what counts as lesser known because a band that’s well known in one place might not be known somewhere else, but here are some of my favourite artists that I don’t think many people will have heard of: Cults – are (according to wikipedia) an indie pop band from NY consisting of a girl and guy. They’re music is good The Maccabees – haven’t been keeping up with them these past couple of years, but their first album was great. They’re an indie rock band from London. This is their song ‘First Love’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6A1xu0BSs2s Foals – Another really good indie rock band from London. This is their epic song, ‘Spanish Sahara’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prGptG5Ex1g Laura Marling – Not a band, but an epic English folk singer. She often teams up with Mumford & Sons. She won a Brit award and she’s only 21. Here’s her song, ‘Ghosts’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSGBhjzrBoo Hadouken! – to change things up, this is an electronica, dance-punk band from Leeds, UK that I think everyone should give a chance. It’s a change from what I normally like and the music’s really catchy. And the drummer’s nickname is Nyan Cat. Here’s there song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEWLZxSGvZw (the music video’s pretty cool too). I could go on all day. |

| Krystin | On the subject of virtually unknown, The Parlor Soldiers: http://theparlorsoldiers.bandcamp.com/ Sorta folky/country/genre-less from Fredericksburg, VA. I’m much more of a folky person than a rocky person. Just checked out Laura Marling and really like her! |

| Natalie | I pretty much listen to indie rock or electronic, so here goes some of my favourites/awesome Canadians. Born Ruffians – favourite band of all time, hands down. they’re from Ontario, Canada and make some damn good indie rock. They have two albums out and a third being recorded right now. Their music has been featured on some tv ads and shows, but that’s about it. Hummingbird – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXAStBDZRsI The Wombats – they’re from the UK, and have actually gotten fairly big since releasing their second album, but they’re still indie at heart. Here’s the big song from the first album ‘Let’s Dance to Joy Division” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayuooyWPEUc&ob=av3e The Drums – modern surf rock from NYC. I was excited for the second album, but it turned out to be super gloomy, if you can call surf rock gloomy. But they’re still lovely. Here’s the single “Let’s Go Surfing” from their first album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeZbbx5SPTs Crystal Castles – some more Canadian awesomeness. They’re very electronic and have been featured prominently in some TV shows. Some of their stuff is a little on the scream-y side, but “I’m Not in Love’ featuring Robert Smith (lead singer of The Cure) is very listenable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32udqal_lyQ And I know ‘Foster the People’ aren’t exactly lesser known after ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ became HUGE, but the rest of their album is phenomenal, worth checking out. Miss You – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWQhQtPIC9Q Segal – He’s the guy who comes up with original music for the UK and US versions of Skins. I love his stuff, and he’s coming out with an actual electronic album SOON. For now, you can get quite a lot of his stuff for free off of his SoundCloud. http://soundcloud.com/segal “Tenthousand Needles” is a favourite of mine. The Dead Ghosts – shoutout to a local band here. Just heard about these guys a few weeks ago, they’ve got this gritty sound that you don’t hear much of anymore. Rockabilly, almost. Not exactly what one would expect to heart coming from a band from the West Coast, but great nonetheless. When It Comes To You – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eOXdfu9KIQ Slow Club – a duet from the UK, their songs seem to have become my anthems lately. Their stuff is . . . perky. it’s hard to describe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huJKfY7O6Es – Giving Up on Love I have no more bands for you, but I do have two tidbits of advice for anyone who wants to discover lesser known bands. Obviously I have spent too much time on this subject. . . I won’t be offended if you TL;DR this. This is what happens when one procrastinates on university applications. |

| Mariah | Here are some suggestions from me: Check these bands out if you want! Hope my description of their sound helps a bit. |
| January 8, 2012 at 4:23 am #21887 | |
| Katie (dreaminginrhythm) | So glad to see so many great bands! Kaizers Orchestra, Bedouin Soundclash, Iron & Wine, Laurena, Blind Pilot… oh, y’all know what is going on! |
| January 8, 2012 at 4:49 am #21918 | |
| Kory | @chuckgluespaper I used to live and work at an experimental music venue here in the midwest. Breathe Owl Breathe was one of the first bands I saw there and it was a supremely moving show. The other there that matched that level of emotional was Ramona Cordova. By the end of this song, the whole venue and staff was in tears (he was a really sweet guy, as well!)– |

| Hilde | So many recommendations! I wish I had the time to listen to all of them now, at least I have something to look forward to doing once I have some spare time… |
| January 8, 2012 at 12:34 pm #22231 | |
| Rowena | I’ve heard of a fair few of these, but I’ll definitely be looking into those I haven’t heard seeing as it looks like I’ve got quite similar taste to a lot of you |
| January 8, 2012 at 1:51 pm #22297 | |
| Nicola | An Aussie indy band, ‘The Former Love’ (formerly known as ‘The Former Love Pirates.’ I’m not even kidding.) They are pretty rad, and did a hilarious Gotye parody. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBX3HQ2hc18 |
| January 8, 2012 at 9:15 pm #23083 | |
| TheStig | For any metalheads here. Red Fang, Kvelertak, Amon Amarth, After the Burial, Animals As Leaders, Periphery. Also, for non metalheads, Biffy Clyro. |
| January 8, 2012 at 11:56 pm #23368 | |
| Liana | Two door cinema club, Hungry kids of Hungary, and I’m not sure if they count as lesser known, but The Cat Empire are one of my favourite bands ever. Felix and Harry from The Cat Empire have recently been releasing some solo stuff too. Also Them swoops, The Sweet Apes (they’re only 16 but they’re pretty good), The Honey Pies, Arts Martial, Dirty Little Rebels- I could keep going for a while @randomlilnikki Just checked out The Former Love and they sound pretty amazing. It’s great to see more Aussie bands getting out there. Thanks for the heads up

| Nicola | @bananasflyupwards Yeah, I love discovering Aussie bands. And I love Two Door Cinema Club! |
| January 9, 2012 at 7:17 pm #24653 | |
| Melissa | Oh, I forgot, there’s a really fantastic musician on youtube by the name of OrtoPilot. Here’s his channel for anyone who is interested http://www.youtube.com/user/ortoPilot He does a lot of covers, but also original songs and has released a couple albums of original songs. I think he’s really great and extremely underrated. |
| January 9, 2012 at 9:55 pm #25043 | |
| Sandy | Hypnogaja and P.O.D. No one knows about them… |
| January 10, 2012 at 1:17 am #25388 | |
| Hannah Victoria | I’m slowly working my way through all these recommendations |
| January 10, 2012 at 10:32 pm #26613 | |
| Alexis | The New Pornographers aren’t well known but they’re also not unknown, Another not well known favorite is Company of Thieves.
|
| January 11, 2012 at 4:10 am #27266 | |
| Leah Remy | Anyone ever listen to Callie Shea Sullivan? Maybe Tylar Ward? They’re both amazing artists, and I even got to meet Callie one summer. She was great, and they’re both great musicians. |
| January 11, 2012 at 4:28 am #27289 | |
| Kory | @7stringninja Love Animals as Leaders. Great mention. Saw them live a couple of years ago with Between the Buried and Me. Epic show. (also, cool to find another nerdfighter into heavy stuff!) |
| January 11, 2012 at 4:05 pm #27464 | |
| Sean | Kupek is a Canadian Indie band thats pretty unknown, all the music is done by the guy who wrote and drew the Scott Pilgrim series. |
| January 11, 2012 at 6:24 pm #27567 | |
| Stephen | Cinema Bizarre. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCEK_04ep_Y&ob=av2n Billy Talent. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGUw0und0HM I won’t post a long list but these two bands are really good and really underrated. |
| January 11, 2012 at 7:57 pm #27674 | |
| anne | It’s kinda funny how many of these “lesser known” bands were huge about ten years ago (Billy Talent, P.O.D…). I guess I’m old… |
| January 14, 2012 at 8:02 pm #31085 | |
| Jeremy | Icon For Hire is a great band. Their songs are so deep, yet so fun to sing with. It’s like mixing everything I love about music in one band. Also, the lead singer has awesome punk pink hair. |
| January 14, 2012 at 9:36 pm #31269 | |
| Tom | Fugazi |
| January 15, 2012 at 12:52 am #31544 | |
| Josephine | I’m not sure how well known this band is… But I’m the only person I know who knows of Brand New? I prefer Deja Entendu to their other albums, but yeah, Brand New. P.S. Frank Turner gets a huge thumbs up. |
| January 24, 2012 at 8:43 pm #41576 | |
| Cat | So glad to see some fans of a few of my favorite bands (Stars, Two Door Cinema Club, Noah & the Whale.) Are there any fans of Jukebox the Ghost, Feather & Belle, Bombay Bicycle Club, Lights Poxleitner, Sailship, Hellogoodbye, Heyhihello!, or Avalanche City out there? If you wanted to widen the spectrum to “artists less appreciated”, I would include Owl City, who is my favorite artist of all time and who I have found but one other fan of (fan meaning someone who listens to more of his music than what has been played on the radio) in my life. |
| January 24, 2012 at 9:29 pm #41594 | |
| Harry | I like Hellogoodbye’s music quite a lot. And Radical Face. I would say Enter Shikari but they’re not so much lesser known. |
| January 24, 2012 at 9:55 pm #41613 | |
| Jeremy | @Cat. I like Owl City’s music. My younger brother has both of his latest CDs, and his music is good, but his songs feel a lot like Ludo’s. |
| January 25, 2012 at 11:43 pm #42512 | |
| Spencer | @7stringninja I love all those bands! Also big into Dream Theater and Opeth, although they’re more known within the realm of metal Some REALLY obscure metal bands that probably one person reading this will know: Junius, Last Chance to Reason, Vektor, Cynic, Revocation, The Protomen And for non-metal nerdfighters… Stepdad (weird happycore electronica), Gentle Giant (70′s prog), Ludique (awesome minimalist electronica), The Left Rights (R-rated hiphop type stuff kind of not really that is made by two members of MSI) …wow I have a weird taste in music. |
| January 26, 2012 at 8:17 pm #43024 | |
| Christina Armstrong | Does anyone here know Belle and Sebastian, The Weepies, Voltaire, or Jets Overhead? I was lazy and this forum was TL;DR. Also, anyone not in Canada that know of Great Big Sea? If not, SEARCH THEM UP! |
| February 19, 2012 at 4:17 pm #56592 | |
| Luke Brekke | Gold Lion These are probably my favourites. You can find Gold Lion’s album up for free download at http://goldlion.mediaroserecords.com/ |
| February 20, 2012 at 11:21 pm #57177 | |
| Abreo | Its so cool to see people mentioning Death Grips, Frank Turner, Jeffery Lewis, Fugazi, Andrew Jackson Jihad and The Dear Hunter. Maybe I missed them but I don’t think my three favorite bands have been mentioned so far. The World Inferno Friendship Society http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJoOu4oH3bU (a lot of their music is different than this but this is my favorite song at the moment). Ramshackle Glory http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC3IrqUpm9U (if anybody knows who Pat the Bunny is in Nerdfighteria I will be so happy.) Bomb the Music Industry! |
| February 21, 2012 at 6:41 am #57393 | |
| Royce | @Abreo |
| February 23, 2012 at 4:45 am #58012 | |
| Abreo | *sniffs* This moment was just as beautiful as I thought it would be. And you listen to Defiance, Ohio! I haven’t listened to them in a while but their music is great. I should listen to those other two bands you mentioned. |
| February 23, 2012 at 8:00 pm #58101 | |
| Natalie | Clean Bandit, their music recently made it on to radio 1 and I am so happy about it, they really deserve recognition. |
| February 23, 2012 at 10:51 pm #58169 | |
| Alex McMillan | FROST* – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBXCYjFX7V4 |
| February 25, 2012 at 3:52 am #58751 | |
| Lowri | Ed Sheeran. He’s recently won best male artist at the Brit Awards this year (not sure if he’s conquered America yet). Give a listen to ‘The A Team’ and get ready to fall in love. I’m surprised a lot of British bands are on here. But I never know if they’re big or not in other places. Like, I told some of my friends in Ohio that I really liked Nada Surf, I thought they were relatively new… Nope! |
| May 2, 2012 at 4:01 am #84439 | |
| Sheridyn | The Antlers Transistor Mogwai Soley You Are My Everything (Or Maybe Stalker. I’m unsure…) |
