I’m not going to name specific numbers, but let’s just say this is a thread for Nerdfighters who are closer to their mid-life crisis than their sweet sixteen.

I’m 29, and just discovered the VlogBrothers this past summer. I love the videos, I adore Hank’s music, and I’ve read Paper Towns and am eagerly awaiting TFiOS (I do have a soft spot for YA). I’m a musician and writer myself, so I sometimes feel like Hank and John are my spirit animals.

So chime in, old folks! Do you enjoy John’s books despite no longer claiming the designation of ‘young adult’? Do you sometimes groan at the teenishness of the comments? Do you avoid attending Nerdfighter gatherings for fear that you’ll feel like a babysitter?

Note: I don’t mean to step on the toes of the 21+ group, who are all fine people I’m sure. And this is not intnded to “segregate” the forum into age groups, but just to create one small corner for Nerdfighters who have kids and mortgages and careers to chat (not that I have any of those things…)

I’m 30 and also discovered John and Hank this past year. Funnily enough, I kept seeing a girl I follow on Tumblr make reference to Looking For Alaska, so I googled it, and that led me to YouTube and the rest is history. I think the reason I love them so much is *because* they’re close to my age. And I respect the effect they have on teenagers and young adults.

As for the community, yes, I definitely feel left out sometimes because I’m older. It’s hard enough explaining to people in real life what the heck a Nerdfighter is without getting weird looks. I went to a StarKid concert last November with my husband and we got SO MANY odd looks, mainly from the other parents, actually. I think it would be easier for my husband and myself if we had more irl friends who were nerds like us, but we don’t, so Nerdfighteria is a nice resource to geek out with others. And we’re both teachers so we’re used to being around teenagers all the time.

But, honestly, I’d love it if John and Hank weren’t quite as “limited” by the majority of the fan base being so young. Or if they had some content more focused toward the adults out there. And I admit, I feel kind of nervous about going to the Tour de Nerdfighting event in a few weeks– I’m not so much worried about the younger fans giving me weird looks, I’m kind of freaked out that it will be John and Hank and Katherine and whoever looking at me strangely. :/

This post makes me feel completely justified in making this thread. Thank you so much for expressing your concerns; I’ve felt a little that way myself. I am also inspired by John and Hank and the positive effect they’re having on so many kids, and I also wish that sometimes they didn’t play to the teenagers so much. But what better way to let them know that they have fans closer to their own age, and therefore to encourage them to speak to our demographic, than by discussing the issue in a thread like this?

Jules, I highly doubt Hank or John or Katherine would give you odd looks for attending the Tour de Nerdfighting, but I can understand feeling a little awkward if you were the only person there over 21. Maybe you can use this thread to connect with other Nerdfighters in your area who are closer to your age? I’m going to the Seattle show myself, and bringing a few newly-minted nerdfighter friends who are in their mid-late 20s :)

Ha, I know they’ll be nice to me, it’s just me feeling odd about being so much older than everyone else there. I wish I could convert some friends into Nerdfighters, but finding friends our age who are into geeky things (in our area, at least) has been really difficult. I was actually hoping to go to the Raleigh event with a few of our old students (who are in their early-20s now), but it didn’t work out. But if we survived the raging fangirls of StarKid then we’ll be fine at a nice calm Vlogbrothers event. :)

Hey there. I was the one who was all “oh we shouldn’t divide up the community by aaaaage” in the other thread. I’m feeling a little sheepish about that now, as I felt relieved to see you two talking about feeling weird being the only person over 21 at Nerdfighter gatherings and the like.

Hey there, Capital ‘A’ Adult coming through. At least that’s what they tell me. I still feel as if I’m masquerading sometimes. Like If I carry a purse, a dignified woman wearing pearls in the grocery store will ask me quietly to hand it over, disappointment radiating.

I’m thirty, I have three children, and I craft for a living. Honestly I didn’t realize that would be an ‘oldster’ here, all the Nerdfighters I know are about my age. =/

The Tour De Nerdfighting is coming through my town, Austin, on the one weekend I won’t be here. I’m devastated. Not just because I won’t get to see Hank and John in the flesh; I was hoping to meet other locals, to feel less disconnected.

@Linden That’s awesome, that most of the Nerdfighters you know are around your age. I learned about VlogBrothers from a friend who’s around 30, so it wasn’t until I started poking around the Ning that I realized how their fanbase is skewed. It makes a certain amount of sense: John writes YA fiction, and a lot of teenagers use YouTube. But I still find it odd that they are the VAST majority.

I posted a song on YouTube about John for signing all the copies of TFiOS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PqUgLfjCuY), and when I poked around the statistics, I found that 83% of viewers were women, and 50% were 13-17. Someone go back in time and tell young Hank and John that one day, they will be incredibly popular with teenage girls. Don’t mention it’ll be after they’re too old and too married to appreciate it ;)

Huzzah for older Nerdfighters! I’m 26, and as someone said earlier, I’ve never met a Nerdfighter my age, nor have come across someone openly nerdy enough to appreciate Nerdfighteria.

All of the Nerdfighters I’ve come across in person are teenagers, but that’s probably because I teach high school for a living, so most of the people I meet are teenagers. Side note: school restarts tomorrow, and now I’m going to be getting reacquainted to Your Pants for hours. This is probably bad for my health.

Anyway, I don’t really have anything to add, just saying, “Hello!” and “I’m glad I’m not the only one out there!”

I’m 29 and just found the VlogBrothers YouTube channel through a friend who about my age and some other people I follow on YouTube (Karen Kavett and Charlieissocoollike). The videos are completely awesome and I am trying to watch all of them from the beginning. I am also trying to find a job as I lost mine in November so I try not to watch to much tube.

Sadly the closest tour stop is in Atlanta and won’t be able to make it at all. :( . I don’t think it would be that weird to be there though at my current age.

@sarahalyse I’m with you on the Charlie thing. And Alex Day. They’re all adorable and funny and I love their videos, but every now and then I feel like a creepy old lady.

For the record, I’m 29 and also came across the VlogBrothers this year – most likely from either a video from Charlie or Alex. Really recently, actually – only in the last 2 or 3 months to be honest. I’ve yet to make any attempt to attend meetups or concerts or anything at all – but it could happen.

Hey there! I posted on the 21+ forum but I like this one even more! I’m 34, with two little Nerdfighters in training. My “real” job is a part time preschool teacher but I am also working on a YA book in my (limited) spare time. I came across the volgbrothers while reading a post where a mom used the term DFTBA and linked the video of John talking about special nerdfighter abilites, so of course I had to go back and watch all the vids. That was my intro to Nerfighteria and also my intro to you-tube, which I now watch more than regular TV.

I would love to be able to attend one of the tour dates, but alas, distance and adult responsiblity is keeping me away :(

Side note: I almost went to see Driftless Pony Club when they were in Rochester NY, but then when I saw the video footage from the show, I realized I would have been the oldest person in the room by at least 15 years (not counting the band)!

Don’t forget; just like wine, awesome gets better with age :)

I think one of the wonderful things about Nerdfighteria is its potential for diversity: it’s age-biased, yes, but not age-exclusive. I’m actually 23, so I have no place in this thread – just wanted to give a shout-out to all you older nerdfighters to let you know that we need you as much as we need anyone else. :)

A bunch of Nerdfighteria’s older generation have teamed up to start the Nerdfighter Big Buddy Program for any and everyone who wants a mentor or just talk to someone who’s a bit older than them self.

We’re not claiming to be any better, smarter or more competent than anybody else in this field, and we’re definitely not experts. But we do know what it’s like to be a nerd and like all different kinds of nerdy things.

So head on over to the group page if you wanna sign up to be a mentor. At the moment there aren’t that many of us, (we only started the group about 10 minutes ago) so we could definitely use a boost!

For me, age-awkwardness comes into play a couple of ways. First, the fangirling of Hank and John. At this point in my life I find it uncomfortable to read video comments that are filled with the typed version of squeals and constant “I love you, wish I could find my own Hank/John!”, especially when the content of the video is a serious subject (the water.org videos, educational videos, etc.). Secondarily, I’m going to a Tour de Nerdfighting event at the end of the month, and since I’ll have space in my car I thought it might be helpful to offer a carpool. Then it occurred to me that I’d be more than twice the age of some of those who need rides, and that’s not only possibly awkward for their parents “wait, why is someone so much older than my child wanting to drive off with them?” but also might not be much of a fun experience for me. I’d feel like I was responsible for them, and it would take some of the joy out of the evening.

I also feel like, even though Hank and John likely did not expect to have such a hugely teen-girl fanbase, they’ve adjusted for it, so that’s where the focus is. In one respect that’s great, I’m glad the community exists for those who are still finding their place in the world, but in another respect I find myself missing the tone of the first year, Brotherhood 2.0, when they were focusing on each other as the main audience, instead of an audience primarily comprised of those still in school.

@sool That’s an awesome idea! Going to sign up now.

@onesweettart Robyn, I totally feel you. Although in one way, the fangirl squealing is good, because it keeps my own in check (I adore John in a real, womanly fashion, and sometimes it’s hard not to squeal a tiny bit when he unbuttons a button or name-checks Edna St Vincent Millay). And yeah, the carpool idea probably wouldn’t work out as intended – speaking as someone who once hosted an event where a few teenagers attended unexpectedly, the other organizer and I (24 at the time) did feel oddly responsible for them. You might try offering and just say “18 and over only — sorry, but if you die on my watch I don’t want angry parents all up in my business.” Or something to that effect.

I discovered the Vlogbrothers last summer and watched all of the videos from the start for a month instead of writing my dissertation. Procrastination much?

I’m 34 and at some point I noticed that the fan base was becoming increasingly tweenish, which is slightly disappointing, not because I have a problem with the youngsters, but since it seemed so much more diverse early on. I just joined and got hooked on tumblr and have found a similar 13-17 year old age range. I’m trying really hard not to succumb to the feeling that I am somehow posing or trying to be younger than I am because I know that I would love nothing more than to make some friends in this community that belong to my own generation.

I’m with @SarahAlyse in my squee feelings about the brothers- one of the first things I checked when I got into them was if they were married. ha! At least they are our age and therefore somewhat appropriate to crush on :)

Anyway, I feel that my message is less coherent than the rest of y’all, but I guess I’m just saying I’m happy that there is this thread and I want to be friends with all of you :)

I wanted to go to the Tour de Nerdfighting event tomorrow with my friend Emily for my birthday but it was sold out before we could buy the tickets. We held off because we didn’t’ know if our jobs would get in the way and if we’d fit in. Glad to see we weren’t the only ones.

So, my husband and I have tickets for the Raleigh event tomorrow. And I’m excited, but also kind of not excited. Because I keep seeing all these stories on tumblr about the experiences others have had at the other shows, and they’re all giddy because they got to tell John that he changed their lives, or they got to hug Hank, or they met 90 bazillion new friends. And I’m just kind of, well, I love John’s books, and they definitely affected me, but they didn’t impact my world that strongly… and I’d feel more than a little strange asking for a hug from Hank… and if I approach a group of teenagers to see if they “want to be friends” that’s a whole crapload of awkward right there… I don’t know. I’m excited to be in a large room full of like-minded people, but I also feel super conscious of how old I am compared to, oh 95% of them. So I’m trying to think of, like, what to say to them in the signing line that will show that I’m a genuine fan, but also be appropriate to my age and maturity level. I fear that blurting out, “youguysaresoawesomepleasebeourfriends” with a crazed look on my face might be a little creepy, but nothing else is coming to mind.

I wish they’d do a few over-21 events. Or something. I don’t know, I just hate feeling so old. :P

We’re here for you, Jules. Let her hear it, guys!

On the subject of wishing Hank and John would make videos for adults, there’s a great interview with John in this video (http://www.wbez.org/blog/mark-bazer/2012-01-09/video-novelist-john-green-talks-fault-our-stars-95403), which is before an adult audience and is BRILLIANT. He swears, talks about Trinidadian prostitutes, and just generally acts like he’s *talking to a group of adults*. It’s like he read this thread and answered our prayers.

WARNING: There are TFiOS spoilers in the interview. And cussing, so maybe NSFW.

Thanks, @SarahAlyse I saw that video the other day and it made me so happy… it reminds me of the old Brotherhood 2.0 videos, before the fanbase started to grow and they had to start modifying the content a bit.

I know it’s dumb to even be worrying about it, it’s just… well, for example, last November the hubby and I also went to a StarKid event. If you’re familiar with StarKid, you know that 99% of the fanbase is made up of rabid teenage girls (at least that’s how it appears on tumblr, ha). So I knew going in that we would probably be the oldest people there, other than the parents. And for the most part it was fine. But I still had that internal struggle of “WOO! Sing along to ALL the songs!” versus “I’m much too old and overweight to be jumping around like a moron while surrounded by hundreds of 14 year olds wearing blue headbands.” So that’s kind of what I’m facing here. (We actually saw one kid in a Pizza John shirt and we were like, “Yay, Nerdfighters!” and he just stared at us like we were trying to entice him into a windowless van…)

I know I’ll have fun. I KNOW this. I know it’ll be amazing to have John autograph my books and Hank and Katherine sign our copy of Super Mario Bros. Wii (if you haven’t watched the HankGames series where they play that game you are *seriously* missing out on some quality entertainment) and just generally be surrounded by brilliance. I just wish I could suspend my “adult” side enough to not feel self-conscious about it… And suddenly the Nerdfighters of a Certain Age forum becomes a therapy session for my quarter-life crisis, sorry about that. :)

(It’s like the post John made on his tumblr the other day referencing Michael Bolton and the tags said that no one under 30 would get the joke and no one over 30 was on tumblr. Um, yeah we are. And we’re here, too!!)

StarKid is amazingly talented. The Potter musicals were great (I really hope Darren Criss’ schedule clears up enough to eventually do a threequel), and Starship, their latest production was pretty good, and I adore Me and My Dick… which is the story of a boy and his dick, if it wasn’t obvious. It doesn’t get much attention because it’s not appropriate for half their fanbase, but I think it’s amazing.

I could totally live in Seattle. So could the husband. The only reason we live in this crappy town is because our parents are here, and I can’t stand the idea of taking my kid away from his grandparents unless absolutely necessary. Stupid adult resposibilities. :(

“Tomorrow” turned into 10 days. Oops. In my defense, I went to my high school’s Homecoming and someone shared a delightful stomach virus with me. It’s been a long week…

Okay, so Tour de Nerdfighting Raleigh was all sorts of awesome, obviously. We got there right when the doors opened, but still managed to get pretty good seats. Struck up a conversation with two college guys sitting next to us. I’d say we were definitely some of the oldest ones there, other than parents and book store staff, but I did see at least 5-6 people who looked around our age who were just there to see the guys.

Let’s see… I’m not going to explain the whole thing unless asked, since there have been several livestreams and all the shows are basically the same. Highlights included Hank having to borrow John’s shirt because he realized he was wearing the same shirt he’d worn in Bethesda the night before and was ashamed of himself. John wore some awesome Adidas Superstars with his suit… and he fidgeted with the buttons on his suit coat constantly, it was kind of adorable. John shared that TFiOS is the book he originally tried to write after working as a chaplain in a children’s hospital and that Alaska, etc are basically results of his failure to write TFiOS. Hank later informed us that in original drafts of TFiOS the story was all about a young, handsome, intelligent hospital chaplain and his journey through life. So yeah, this version is better. :) Someone asked why all his female characters have green eyes and wear blue nail polish and he claimed that it was completely coincidental. The buzzer went off while Hank was talking and John was VERY happy and did a few laps around the stage in his joy. Oh, and Hank dressed up in his Hankroll outfit is hilarious. He’s such a pretty pretty princess.

We were in group F for the signing line, so we didn’t have to wait very long at all. They limited it to three items per brother, which kind of stunk because I brought ALL my books with me (or thought I did, Husband forgot Paper Towns which still annoys me a little), but I managed to still get a book signed for one of my old students. Katherine didn’t come out at our event (though Hank tried to find her, but there was just too much of a rush) so only Hank signed our Super Mario Bros. Wii case. We informed John that we were both over 30 and on tumblr and he responded with a laugh that that made three of us. Then we talked about Henry and about our little boy, Noah, and the joys of toddlers and how sad he was to miss Henry’s birthday. He actually said that Henry asked him on the phone, “I hold you now?” which is how he asks for hugs and how it broke his heart that he couldn’t hug him over the phone. :( We asked Hank why and he and Katherine don’t let loose and curse more during SMBros and he said that Katherine’s nephew watches so they try to keep it clean for him. And assured us that they spend half their time playing literally trying not to kill each other in real life. And we were so busy talking to them I forgot to get my copy of TFiOS Hanklerfished, which sucked, but I got one on our poster and my CD. :)

So yeah. That was it. Oh, and when Hank posted the clues for the NC Nerd Cache I figured them out and we went down a few days later to check it out. We were the first ones to find it, as far as I know. I tweeted Hank and he replied and implied that I was hardcore for finding it because it was one of the hardest ones they’d done. So that pretty much made my week. Husband got sad that Hank didn’t reply to him as well, though… poor Husband. :(

So. That was a long post. Someone else’s turn now. :)

Jules, I’m a leeeeeetle jealous. There were so many people at the Seattle event, and we were in group K, so by the time we got there they were pretty tired and just shuffling people through. I barely even made eye contact with John.

This was my first Nerdfighter event, and even though the majority of people there were younger, I didn’t really feel it. I jammed on “Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton” with a couple of boys who could not have been more than 14 apiece, and let a couple of teenage girls use my credit card for the photo booth (it was card only, if you can believe it). A guy next to me also brought his ukulele, and we started playing the Anglerfish Song while waiting for the show to start, and we ended up storming the stage to lead the crowd in a sing-along. Turns out the he’s still in high school (I thought he was 21, officer, I swear!)

My friends all had an awesome time (two were totally new to Nerdfighteria and one was, as she said, “a lapsed Protestant of a Nerdfighter”). My friend Dana, who has never seen a single video or read any of John’s books, was sliding out of her seat with laughter during John’s reading of TFiOS.

Overall, everything was beautiful and nothing hurt (Well, not getting any real face time with Hank or John was a bummer, but one I was prepared for and understand).

EDIT: Also I saw The Katherine wandering around and my heart did a thing. Not going to lie: I totally have a crush on her.

@sarahalyse We actually considered ourselves really lucky to be one of the first stops on the tour, and a fairly small one. They were tired, but not crazy tired like they have been the past few weeks. And as quickly as we got up there being in Group F (I think we waited *maybe* half an hour) I don’t think the signing line took nearly as long as it did at the larger events. The only things that bummed me out were 1) Lack of The Katherine (they implied that she had gotten a little freaked out by fans at previous stops) and 2) Lack of a decent place to take photos. The guys were up on a stage (we were in a school auditorium) and basically you could stand down in the pit below, about 10-15 feet away to take pictures. Not the best angle. :)

Oh, and if you haven’t read their reddit AMA from the other day you really should. Highlights include the girl who admitted that she was so engrossed in TFiOS that she continued reading it while having sex with her boyfriend. o.0

A lovely person on tumblr edited the convo down for convenience, I’ll put the link below for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. :)

I’m glad I went with my instinct not to bother her and just felt twitterpated from afar :)

Even though our wait for the line was much longer than a half hour, it was far from boring. In some ways, that was the best part of the show: just milling around, surrounded by hundreds of nerdfighters, was pretty amazing.

Hello. I’m Allibeth. A certain age of 29. I don’t feel awkward around the younger crowd, but sometimes I do get annoyed that I can’t find a nerdfighter my age or that has enough in common with me. I’d like to make some nerdfighter friends. My local friends look at me like I’m crazy when I start talking about YouTube, nerdfighters, etc.

This thread is made of awesome. (c;

Hey, @theallibeth! We seem to have quite a few people in this thread of about that age. The cusp of thirty must be a good time for nerdfighting.

The Cusp of Thirty needs to be the title of something.
