| January 4, 2012 at 6:47 pm #14019 | |
| SarahAlyse | Aren’t 13- and 14-year-olds teenagers by definition? |
| January 4, 2012 at 7:34 pm #14119 | |
| olympia | idk i feel out of place with the fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, etc year olds |
| January 4, 2012 at 10:44 pm #14684 | |
| Lauren | Hiya. I just turned fourteen a month ago. And yeah @sarahalyse (did I do that right?), 13 and 14 year olds are teens, but when you’re not in high school, it doesn’t really count for much. Just ask all of the “teens” who are still on Kids React |

| Emma | hey there. i’m 13 & in grade eight as well. open to making some friends. |

| SooL | A bunch of Nerdfighteria’s older generation have teamed up to start the Nerdfighter Big Buddy Program for any and everyone who wants a mentor or just talk to someone who’s a bit older than them self. We’re not claiming to be any better, smarter or more competent than anybody else in this field, and we’re definitely not experts. But we do know what it’s like to be a nerd and like all different kinds of nerdy things. So head on over to the group page if you wanna sign up for a mentor. At the moment there aren’t that many of us, (we only started the group about 10 minutes ago) but join now and browse tomorrow! http://yourpants.org/groups/the-nerdfighter-big-buddy-program-988601301/ |

| Lauren | Well, hiya, @emma. I’ll check out that group page too. I might not participate, but it’s definitely a pretty jokes project, and it’s worth checking out. |

| Quinn Schuster | I am 13 and in 8th grade. I’d also like to point out that anyone over 12 is a teenager… |
| January 5, 2012 at 6:31 am #15874 | |
| Leo Shannon | Hi guys, I’m 13/8th grade. But yeah, I do feel like 15-18 year olds are more considered ‘teens’ than 13-14 year olds. Nice to see a thread for us though! |
| January 6, 2012 at 8:51 am #18039 | |
| Lauren | 8th graders FTWWWWW lol. There’s so many of us here. |
| January 7, 2012 at 10:55 pm #21220 | |
| Jordan | I’ll be the rebel because I’m 12 and in 7th. |
| January 8, 2012 at 6:25 am #22040 | |
| Lauren | Well, hi! |
| January 12, 2012 at 4:28 am #28396 | |
| Leo Shannon | Question: Are you guys looking forward to high school or not? I have spent nine years at my current school and to be honest, I’m counting the days until I can get a taste of something new. |
| January 15, 2012 at 12:35 am #31509 | |
| Lauren | I’m in a similar situation. I’ve been at my school since pre-school, for a decade. I can’t wait to go to high school. The problem with my school is the administration, the students, and to a lesser extent, the teachers. Basically, we got a new superintendent/principal (she holds both positions), and she completely changed things around to suit her needs. It’s like, did you ever learn about Andrew Jackson’s spoils system? She literally fires some of our best teachers just so she can hire her friends. She did away with all tradition, and her fake positive attitude is just beyond superficial. And, that’s not even covering the students. They literally don’t want any say in their education, at all. I just find myself constantly thinking: “Why am I here? What am I doing with these people? Why am I not surrounded with people who care about school?” We can’t even get through a class period without them acting like immature toddlers and calling out or walking around the room aimlessly. But, I’m also transitioning from public school to private school, so that’ll be a great solution to my problem. Sorry for the brick of text :/ |
| January 15, 2012 at 12:39 am #31518 | |
| Emily Ramsey | Huh. I’m fourteen like the rest of you and I consider myself a teen, so… yeah.
|
| January 15, 2012 at 3:22 am #31881 | |
| Kelsey | 14. 8th grade. I consider myself fairly mature, but I’m sure 1 or 2 years down the road, I will look back and categorize myself as a kid. Or an idiot. Or both. As for High School, I’m looking forward to it, I suppose. However, my district is also going through re-zoning, and the majority of the nerdfighter population here will be sent to another high school. I am significantly bummed. I feel like I’m prepared, though. |
| January 16, 2012 at 3:23 am #33306 | |
| Jordan | I’m not scared of, or eagerly awaiting high school. First of all, I’ll probably be going to the same private school I’ve gone to for the majority of my life (unless something really, really big comes up, which I doubt). Second, it seems like I’ll be doing less of experiencing new things that are supposed to come with going to high school, and more of just going through the ritual. Most of the teachers are the same, it’s the same hall (small school), same rooms, mostly same people. It’s changed a lot over the past couple years, but the changes seem normal now. It all seems like school to me, but every year, you go up a level in ‘status’. |
| January 16, 2012 at 4:07 am #33368 | |
| Lauren | See, this is precisely the reason why high school is going to be like, salvation for me: You don’t meet intelligent people so easily in a public school where class sizes are 70-80 kids maximum. I’m not really nervous, though. I mean, I’ve never been a “new kid” before, but the students at the school I’m going to (it’s K-12) have seen me around a couple times, in various places. There’ll also be a bunch of new kids, so, meh. But I’m not too worried about “fitting in”, because somebody who doesn’t value education is not going to be having their parents spend the money on the pricey tuition. On a side note, did you guys read TFiOS yet? |
| January 16, 2012 at 4:28 am #33402 | |
| Leo Shannon | It’s really interesting reading all of your answers! As for me, I’m going to a public school which, despite being very big, offers really great science-y classes, which I’m into. And yes, I read all of TFiOS the day it came out, and LOVED IT. John’s best book by far, I think, though the others were great as well. Who else enjoyed it?
|
| January 16, 2012 at 1:47 pm #33585 | |
| James | I am also 12 and 7th grade. I became I nerdfighter when I was 11 though. |
| January 16, 2012 at 6:06 pm #33721 | |
| Kelsey | I am currently re-reading TFIOS, because I felt like I needed more time to process it. Though I do love it, I rank it just under Paper Towns when it comes to John’s books. My presonal ranking: 1.LFA (What is with the initialization of John’s book titles?) Okay, an important question: Who is going to Tour De Nerdfighteria 2012? I feel like no one our age goes to these events, and I’m going to be so out of place in the crowd. |
| January 16, 2012 at 6:39 pm #33760 | |
| James | I totally understand why you feel like that and it’s kind of the one thing that makes me not sure if I want to go to VidCon. |
| January 16, 2012 at 7:54 pm #33905 | |
| Leo Shannon | Yeah, I think I might feel a little out of place as well, but I recently converted my best friend into a nerdfighter, so we will be going together. There are going to 600+ people attending most events, though, so I’m guessing at least some of them will be our age. Oh, and my ranking of TFiOS: |
| January 16, 2012 at 8:06 pm #33950 | |
| Charlotte | Yeah, I felt the same way, but I also have some friends going with me. |
| January 16, 2012 at 8:22 pm #33974 | |
| Leo Shannon | Not yet, but I’ve heard some great things about her writing, so I plan to. |
| January 16, 2012 at 8:24 pm #33976 | |
| Charlotte | I’ve only read “The Name of the Star” but it was so good. So. Good. |
| January 16, 2012 at 9:04 pm #34045 | |
| James | I want to read Maureen Johnson but I haven’t yet. |
| January 17, 2012 at 3:40 am #34907 | |
| Frawmus | Never too old to be a kid!! |
| January 17, 2012 at 6:40 pm #35300 | |
| Lauren | I’m not a big Maureen Johnson fan. I tried to read 13 Little Blue Envelopes, but I got bored a few chapters in. I’m definitely going to give some of her other books a try. Also, I went to a Tour de Nerdfighting event! I went with my friend to the one in New York! There were like, only a few other kids who were middle school-ish aged, and they were probably like 6th or 7th graders. But John and Hank were really nice, they didn’t treat us like we were kids when they greeted us and everything. That’s what I like about John and Hank: They don’t treat kids and teens like everyone else does. Also, I’m gonna jump on the bandwagon of rating John’s books. TFiOS is definitely first, and WGWG is definitely last. I can’t place the other three. I’ve read AAOK twice, and I appreciated it more the second time. I’ve only read LFA once, although I did read a couple parts twice. And for PT, I’ve read the whole book once, and parts 1 and 3 twice lol. And in WGWG, I liked David’s/gay/lowercase Will more than John’s/straight/uppercase Will. |
| January 17, 2012 at 10:35 pm #35552 | |
| James | I need to read Will Grayson, Will Grayson. I have it but haven’t read it yet. |
| January 18, 2012 at 5:15 am #36024 | |
| Lauren | It’s okay. I liked the idea of it and everything: Two people who share a name, crossing paths… But I just didn’t find anything inherently interesting about the story. |
| January 19, 2012 at 9:11 pm #37208 | |
| James | Everyone in my family other than me read it and liked it. I don’t think it sounds like the best of his books, but I’ll definitely read it. |
| January 21, 2012 at 2:05 pm #38334 | |
| James | Where has everyone gone? |
| January 21, 2012 at 10:00 pm #38722 | |
| Leo Shannon | Back to our hidey-holes. But I think questions are the best conversation-starters, although I am kind of out of them at the moment. |
| January 22, 2012 at 12:23 pm #39172 | |
| James | What are your favorites of Hank’s songs? |
| January 22, 2012 at 5:30 pm #39279 | |
| Charlotte | I never got really into Hank’s music, but the two I do like are A Song About Anglerfish and A Song About Quarks. Any recommendations? |
| January 22, 2012 at 5:43 pm #39286 | |
| James | You might like I Know or Fathers of the Founding Fathers. Those are kind of similar to the ones you like. |
| January 23, 2012 at 1:00 am #39907 | |
| Lauren | I like Strange Charm and A Song About an Anglerfish. I don’t really like many of Hank’s songs, but they’re all very clever. Like, the lyrics to all of his songs are brilliant. Example: I Know – a song with ten words? That sounds really hard to do! At the tour, I bought his album thing, and Video Game Books is amazing. I haven’t listened to it as many times as another TFiOS song… you’ll find it at dft.ba/-tfiossong. |
| January 23, 2012 at 1:15 am #39930 | |
| Charlotte | Oh yeah, are there things for sale at the tour? |
| January 23, 2012 at 3:01 am #40144 | |
| Leo Shannon | My favorites are Phineas Cage, Anglerfish, It All Makes Sense at the End, and that song from his video about Steve Jobs. Also, he did a duet with Katherine covering a Rancid song, Olympia, WA, which was really sweet. On a side note, does anyone here listen to the Mountain Goats? |
| January 23, 2012 at 3:57 am #40243 | |
| Lauren | Yeah, there are things for sale. Albums, all of John’s books in paperback and hardcover (and they had some of Maureen Johnson’s in NYC, IDK about other places), t-shirts (but they sell out really quickly), and posters. Some stuff is exclusive to the tour. And no, I don’t listen to the Mountain Goats. Anything good I should check out? Leftover Christmas iTunes cards |
| January 23, 2012 at 6:04 am #40412 | |
| Leo Shannon | hmm. Let’s see. These two songs are good: |
| January 23, 2012 at 8:22 pm #40675 | |
| Lauren | The first one’s video… Wow. I realize it wasn’t actually all shot in one take, but it’s still fantastic. It reminded me of that OK Go one, and even though I’m not really a fan of their music, the one video was awesome. It was a giant Rube Goldberg (which is always cool). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qybUFnY7Y8w. But, anyway, back on the Mountain Goats, I liked it. I didn’t like, love, it, but, I liked it. I’d just have to get used to it more. Like, how we all listened to Forever Yours 80 million times before we actually like it? |
| January 23, 2012 at 8:30 pm #40682 | |
| Charlotte | Yeah, and then we realized we didn’t need to, because however many times we listened to it, during Christmas week we heard it ten times that amount. |
| January 23, 2012 at 10:06 pm #40815 | |
| Jordan | As of Hank’s music, I like Strange Charm (waiting for when quarks finally come up in science), I Know, and A Song About an Anglerfish. No, I do not listen to The Mountain Goats. :S
|
| January 24, 2012 at 12:00 am #40916 | |
| James | I don’t listen to The Mountain Goats. They seem good, though. |
| January 24, 2012 at 6:36 pm #41540 | |
| Lauren | Jordan, I was reading your post, and then after I read “(waiting for when quarks finally come up in science)” I said “I know!!!” And then immediately laughed because those were the next words in your post… Haha. BTW, You rap too well. I can’t keep up with it -_- lol. |
| January 24, 2012 at 7:33 pm #41548 | |
| Leila Colette | Hi. My name is Leila. I’m 10 and in sixth grade. I feel too young to be here but it says this group is for 10 to 14 year olds. I just wanted to say and see if I would fit in. I’m sort of mature for my age. I grew up with 12 older siblings so I can keep up with older kids. And I am ahead in school so I guess I’m smart. It’s just really hard to fit in there because I’m younger than everybody. |
| January 24, 2012 at 8:23 pm #41567 | |
| Leo Shannon | Hi, Leila! Yeah, you’re definitely welcome here. And also, 12 older siblings? Wow, as an only child I can’t begin to imagine what that’s like! And @Lauren, I found that I didn’t quite fall in love with the Mountain Goats until I had gotten used to listening to their songs. If you do end up liking them enough to go to a concert, I would strongly recommend it. Even when it’s just John Darnielle solo, there’s so much energy and passion he puts into every show. So, anyone else have any good music recommendations? |
| January 24, 2012 at 8:45 pm #41578 | |
| Jordan | @Lauren, wow. That’s weird. |
