I have two names ‘Joshua’ which I talk on very rarely. and the one you’ll almost always see me takling on is “root” (5 points if you are familiar with what the reference is too. I’ll give you a hint. It’s a linux/unix term)

Can any one here recommend a good Windows/Multi-platform IRC client? The current offerings seem rather lacking, but maybe I’m just missing something great somewhere.

For Windows I recommend mIRC. As stated above it says it is only free/usable for 30 days but there’s always been a way around that by clicking ‘continue’ after a few seconds (I’m really surprised that they’ve kept that in there).
Also for Windows is HydraIRC and KvIRC but I don’t recommend those. mIRC is more popular and frankly, in my opinion, mIRC is easier to setup and use.

As for multi-platform. xchat aqua is on Mac and Linux and there IS a free version on Windows, however in my opinion, the free version of xchat for windows SUCKS compared to xchat on Linux.

Also for Mac (and Ipad and Iphone – although I believe it costs $2 on ipad/iphone) is Colloquy — It is very popular.

Finally, on Linux, there’s xchat and then for people that like text-based/command-line based there is irssi (which is what I use in screen on my server)

In addition to Multi-platform, Firefox has an addon which is an IRC client called Chatzilla.

I use ChatZilla. I always forget to join the nerdfighter channel since it is on its own network

@lucylane Oo, thanks, I’ve used Y-Chat (branch of X-Chat) generally up til now, but kvIRC looks like a pretty clean looking alternative (it’s no Colloquy, but when I’m stuck on Windows I’ve gotta find something)

I do think I need to post a little notice. Not completely necessary, although it could be helpful.
For the month of January, we have imposed a TEMPORARY rule of NO TFIOS SPOILERS.
Anyone that posts TFIOS spoilers (regardless of whether they are true or fake) will receive a 24-hour ban. Also, to show that this is completely serious, I will tell you that someone has already received a 24-hour ban (before New Year’s Eve).

@maximumrfan yay a fellow irssi user. We have several of those on the network – including myself. Personally I prefer running it in screen to keep it open (also I have it run on one of the servers, so theoretically I can access it from anywhere via sshing in. Although I don’t have a laptop ..or a smartphone (believe it or not, apparently there are SSH apps for smartphones. If I EVER get a smartphone I am totally going to get an SSH app – it would be useful since I have SSH logins for all the Nerdfighteria IRC servers)

P.S. Have you been on the network? I don’t recognize your display name/user name.

I do keep putty open. but occasionally I disconnect (home internet, ya know). can’t stay sshed into the server 24/7 although most of the time I sometimes am connected for 24h)

As of today, the Nerdfighteria Network Board of Directors has decided to split from the original Nerdfighteria IRC. This unfortunate choice came upon the fact that the original founder of the network, Joshua C. (root as known on the IRC), has showed neglect to democratically setup the domain, and overall network resources. He has repeatedly abused his power, showed rudeness, made threats to sell users’ email addresses to spammers and even to take down the entire Nerdfighteria IRC. We wanted to act before he does that, so we can still reach you, the nerdfighters who make this network so awesome. We have nothing personal against Joshua, but we want the network to keep running, and expand – and this is impossible in the current state.

If you are connecting with an IRC client, please change it to connect to irc.dftba.net. If you have been using a web client, you can now connect at chat.dftba.net.

The facts are true. This is undeniable, though we would be willing to answer any challenge you may have to them. The logs, which are posted at the link mentioned above, reflect factually your attitude toward the network and its users. The board did vote, and we have split the network.

The question of whether it is official can be answered with the answer to another question: Is Nerdfighteria IRC run by its board, of whom all but one member (being you) voted in favor of splitting, or is it run by you? If the former, the split and the post are official. If not, I believe this only re-enforces the statements we made regarding your unwillingness to listen to others in the operation of the network.

Pretty much everyone from the old network is now on chat.dftba.net.
